HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US!

On a beautiful September day, September 30, 1986, to be exact, with very little fanfare but lots of palpitations, anticipation and excitement, our family unlocked the door to the E. 48th Street Market for the very first time.  Little did we know what the future would bring.

That was 38 years ago, and we haven’t regretted a minute of it. We had our challenges, as most new businesses do, but we were helped and guided and encouraged by so many supportive people.  How could we not have plugged on.

Today, 38 years later, we look back over the years and recall the countless friends we have made.  We have shared wonderful times with many people, and we’ve shared some sad stories too.  Customers who come in today are many of the same people who came in as young children, toddlers even, with their parents looking forward to getting a cookie. Now they bring their children in and the cookies are there for them too. We still are blessed with some of our early on customers who have matured with us and it is welcomed to share stories.

We have become a big part of the community, which was one of our major ideals in our planning stages. We support USO, neighborhood school functions, Kingsley Harvest Baskets, Rotary Club of Dunwoody, our most valuable Dunwoody Police, Anchor Place Respite-Dunwoody, many civic associations, to name a few. All in the name of a little neighborhood store.  But we still remain the small neighborhood store with the “WELCOME HOME” sign to greet one and all.

Thank you to our many loyal customers who have become great friends and  many even like family to us.  Without a doubt, we never could have done it without you! We can’t thank you enough for all the support you have given us over the years and most especially during the pandemic when everything was a challenge.

We are most grateful to each and every one of you.
We are genuinely grateful for Jose and our supportive staff.

PS: A little side story!
A lot has happened since Sept. 1986:

When the Market first opened our plan was for customers to shop for groceries, prepared Italian foods prepared from family recipes and Hero sandwiches were for take-away only.  After several months some customers happily persisted in eating in and enjoy their Hero’s at one of our counters where now stands the pastry case. When the counter became too crowded, they would make room on the grocery shelves and set their sandwich and drink there. That was the start of indoor dining!

Interior shelves were multi-use.

To avoid the overcrowding and make their mealtime more enjoyable, as money and time permitted, we added cement tables outside for dining     “al fresco” in nice weather but, as anticipated, hot and humid became a problem. So a plastic canopy with drop sides was added and slowly as planning and permits were allowed that eventually led to our now enclosed patio which is air conditioned or heated as necessary. This also enabled us to cater large evening parties. Adaption to wants and needs is always ongoing!

A lot has happened in 38 years. Customers have become friends, children who came in with their parents and received a cookie now come in with their children who also receive a cookie. Our son. Chuck, who started out with us has since moved over to another career and Andrea our oldest daughter, now basically runs the Market with Charlie ever on the sidelines. Our two other daughters, Erica and Claudia are often seen there working as are a few grandchildren. It definitely is a family affair.

AND NOW YOU KNOW!
