GLIMPSE A NORDIC BREAKFAST

As I journey through the stunning landscapes of Norway, I can’t help but savor all the delicious foods I encounter. To me, trying different dishes is the best way to experience the true flavor of a country! I’ll try to share a little of what I love about breakfast here. Pour yourself a cozy cup of coffee or tea and settle in for a tasty read!
To begin, have you ever wondered what breakfast looks like in the Nordics? Hmmm, probably not! So while traveling around Norway on Regent’s Seven Seas Splendor I invite you to peek at their breakfast offerings for a little culinary adventure through a Nordic morning meal.
A TASTE OF SAVORY DELIGHTS!
While sweet breakfasts do make an appearance here in the Nordics, they typically enjoy a range of savory options to kick-start the day. They like to keep it healthy and nutritious, so sugary breakfasts aren’t usually in the mix. However here on this ship they offer a variety of sweet breads, also, to start with coffee.
WHOLEMEAL BREAD AND CRISPBREAD!
Most breads and knekkebrød (crispbread) in the Nordics are packed full of healthy grains and seeds, and breakfast wholemeal bread and wholegrain knekkebrød are staples.
Wholemeal or whole grain bread is preferred and knekkebrød made with grains like rye are normal.
CHEESE AND JAM TOGETHER IS A THING HERE!
At home I am just as they are here, famous for pairing apple sauce and pork, or cheese and, not so much, sweet chutney, but it surprised me a little to see Jarlsberg cheese with strawberry jam, or raspberry jam and brunost on menus. But give it a try I did and it was yummy. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it and so if you are craving something sweet with your breakfast it’s a great compromise.
COFFEE IS A DEFINITE MUST!
The Nordic countries are famous for their coffee drinking. Fortunately, for me, it starts first thing in the morning and carries on for every break throughout the day. Yes, coffee with breakfast is a must. And it’s drunk black. I stun them when I ask for steamed milk.
THERE IS ALWAYS PLENTY OF PROTEIN!
A healthy Nordic breakfast will always include lots of protein. Favored are caviar, hard boiled eggs or ham. There are so many types of salamis and cured meats to choose from in the Nordics that it would be difficult not to find something appealing and gave you the chance to include some protein in your breakfast.

FISH IS FAVORED!
Of course, countries that have so much coastline would definitely include fish at the first meal of the day. So, too, a Nordic breakfast usually includes fish of some kind or another. It might be pickled herring, smoked salmon or a simple spread of caviar, (who could deny caviar!) but it’s often there on the breakfast table.
PORRIDGE IS THE CHOICE FOR THE WINTER!
Winter in the Nordics can be brutally frigid so it would be common to have something warming before the start of the day. Porridge or grøt is the obvious choice for cold mornings and Nordic porridge comes in a wonderful variety from the most familiar oat porridge to barley and rice porridge. Many that we are used to having ourselves in winter.
Except for the fish and caviar it does not seem to different from breakfast offerings at home. But I surely wouldn’t turn down caviar if I saw it on my breakfast table.
