Absolutely! August is indeed a unique month with a rich history and various celebrations. Here are some more details about the significance and events associated with August: August was named in honor of Emperor Augustus in 8 BC. It was originally called “Sextilis” because it was the sixth month in the Roman calendar. The ancient Roman calendar began in March and did not include January or February. In many cultures, August is associated with the harvest season, particularly for crops like grains and fruits.
And in many regions of the Northern Hemisphere, August is typically the warmest month, marking the peak of summer. This leads to hot weather and, in some areas, increased humidity and thereby fittingly given the tag “Dog Days of Summer”.
August features a variety of fun and meaningful observances, including Friendship Day celebrated on the first Sunday of August, this day honors friendships and the bonds we share with others.
National Watermelon Day is observed on August 3rd a day which celebrates one of summer’s most refreshing fruits, the watermelon. And not to be forgotten, Women’s Equality Day observed on August 26th, and it commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote!
Overall, August is a vibrant month filled with warmth, celebration, and a reflection on the importance of relationships and community.
In our family we have important birthdays to celebrate, husband, grandson Vince on the 9th, Charlie on the 17th, and daughter Andrea on the 29th along with many friends all throughout the month.
However, in Georgia, one thing that has baffled me for the over 40 years we have lived here is why school starts in August as early as the 4th. With all the heat and humidity, Georgia is noted for, why take the children out of the fresh air and place them in mostly poorly air-cooled or air-conditioned classrooms. I am told it started back many years ago when laborers were needed in the fields, but those days are over. So, it just doesn’t make much sense, at least not to me!
Whether enjoying the last days of summer or yearning for the upcoming cooler weather, there’s much to appreciate in Georgia. So, bring it on!
