On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation was signed.
November 11 is significant because it marks the anniversary of the end of World War I, which is when an armistice was signed between the Allied nations and Germany at “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918.
Veterans Day is a special day dedicated to honoring all who have served in the U.S. armed forces. It’s a time to celebrate their patriotism, courage, and the sacrifices they’ve made in both war and peace. This day provides us with an opportunity to express our gratitude to living veterans for their invaluable contributions to our national security and to recognize the sacrifices of everyone who has served.
Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who gave their lives in military service, Veterans Day celebrates every individual who has donned the uniform, including those currently serving and veterans from past conflicts. It’s a heartfelt acknowledgment of their commitment and dedication, reminding us of the importance of their service.
The origins of Veterans Day trace back to World War I, initially known as Armistice Day, commemorating the peace agreement that ended the war on November 11, 1918. In 1954, after both World War II and the Korean War, Congress passed a bill—signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower—changing the name to Veterans Day to honor all veterans, not just those from WWI. Today, this day also celebrates those involved in the Vietnam war.
For a time, Veterans Day was celebrated on a designated Monday to create a long weekend. However, in 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a bill making November 11th the official day to honor our veterans.
As we observe this important day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of our veterans and express our heartfelt thanks for their service. Their dedication ensures our freedoms and security, and they truly deserve our recognition and appreciation every day of the year.
PRAY FOR ALL WHO ARE SERVING
AND WHO HAVE SERVED
SO THAT WE CAN BE FREE.
GOD BLESS THEM ONE AND ALL!
